MUD LAKE REMODEL
RESIDENTIAL REMODEL IN NEDERLAND, COLORADO
Located in idyllic Nederland, Colorado, nestled above the reservoir with expansive views of the Indian Peaks Wilderness, sits a ‘90’s spec mountain home where our clients have been torn between moving to their dream home or creating their dream home to stay put. They expressed a desire to revamp their home to better take advantage of the abundant daylight and views their unique site affords, and create a truly unique custom mountain home with more space and a contemporary appearance. With our design we proposed removing the gable roofs at either end of the house and raising the walls to support higher flat roofs. This allowed for tall windows and large folding doors on the view side, greatly increasing available daylight and opening up sweeping mountain and sky views. The proposed addition to the living room at the east end of the home, along with the new taller flat roof over the space, provided the opportunity for a roof deck over the space, accessed by a spiral stair from the deck. The existing deck structure was retained but the footprint was expanded by cantilevering the new decking. All the heavy wood railings will be replaced with metal railings that are more transparent, disappearing visually. A small addition was proposed to the kitchen, which was completely remodeled along with the master bedroom suite. All other bathrooms were renovated and a new open stair was proposed to the second floor, allowing southern light to reach deeper into the house. The exterior was further transformed with a new custom entry door, and the replacement/enlargement of all windows. A new palate of natural exterior materials including weathering steel, copper, and wood siding products intended to age and weather to a natural gray patina are proposed to re-skin the entire home and complete the metamorphosis into the custom modern mountain home of our client’s dreams.
